Prepare Soil For Planting
Preparing your soil before the winter weather occurs will make spring planting much easier and more successful. Here is a simple step-by-step guideline for preparation.
- Spring planting preparation should be started before the ground freezes.
- Choose a site with good amounts of sunlight, is protected from strong winds and rough weather, and has well-drained soil.
- Water the site in order to make digging easier.
- Loosen up the top foot of soil using a garden fork or a shovel.
- Remove any debris and break up any large dirt clumps.
- Add garden soil at the top of your site and mix into the tilled soil. Be sure to follow packaging instructions.
- If desired, a few inches of organic compost can be mixed into the soil.
- Water the soil well and allow it to settle.
- When spring arrives, loosen up the soil one more time and apply a specially formulated fertilizer. Follow the packaging instructions on that specific fertilizer bag.
- Wait a full week prior to planting your trees.
